Source: EU still sees Russian food imports embargo unjustified

BRUSSELS, Aug 9 (PRIME) -- The E.U. continues to see Russia’s prohibition of food imports as an unjustified step, a source in the European Commission told PRIME on Friday.

“The E.U. thinks that the Russian prohibition of agricultural goods imports from the E.U. is unjustified because it is retaliation,” the source said. “The majority of the goods have found alternative markets, both inside the E.U. and outside it.”

In 2014, relations between Russia and the West deteriorated to their worse since the Cold War due to a military conflict in Ukraine. The West has introduced several sets of sanctions against some Russian individuals and companies, the energy and banking sectors since then.

In response, Russia limited food imports from some countries, including the U.S., the E.U., Canada, Australia, and Norway.
